BELLINGHAM – State agricultural officials have confirmed an infestation of the invasive spotted lanternfly in Bellingham.
The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources says the insect does not sting and is not considered dangerous to people or pets. However, spotted lanternflies can cause significant problems for agriculture and plant life, feeding on crops and plants that include grapevines, hops and maple trees.
Residents can expect to see surveyors from MDAR and the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the area later in the growing season. Crews will examine trees and other vegetation to determine how widespread the Bellingham infestation has become.
Residents who are unfamiliar with the spotted lanternfly can find information and pictures to help identify the invasive insect on the Town of Bellingham website.
