MARLBOROUGH, Mass. — As the world’s most popular sporting event arrives in Massachusetts, local leaders are creating a place where soccer fans and families alike can come together to celebrate.
The Marlborough Fan Zone will transform Keller Field into a World Cup festival destination, featuring live match broadcasts, food vendors, entertainment, family activities, and opportunities to showcase the MetroWest region to visitors from across New England and beyond.
According to Stacey David of the MetroWest Visitors Bureau, the Fan Zone was created through a partnership between the City of Marlborough, the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation, the MetroWest Visitors Bureau, the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the MetroWest Chamber of Commerce.
“We’re excited to have an event that residents will really love to be a part of and bring the community together,” David said during an interview on The Zone on MyFM 101.3. “We’re also excited to be welcoming visitors, whether that’s from the other side of Massachusetts or the other side of the world.”
The Fan Zone will feature several high-profile World Cup matchups throughout opening weekend, including matches involving the United States, Mexico, Brazil, and Haiti. Organizers selected the games not only because of their significance in the tournament, but also because they reflect the diverse communities that call MetroWest home.
One matchup expected to draw significant attention is Haiti versus Scotland, the first World Cup match scheduled to be played at Gillette Stadium, which will be known as Boston Stadium during the tournament.
“Anybody who couldn’t get tickets to the actual game can at least watch it live and be part of the excitement here,” David said.
While the soccer matches will be the centerpiece of the event, organizers say the Fan Zone is designed to offer much more than a traditional watch party.
Visitors can expect food trucks, a beer garden, local vendors, arts and crafts displays, inflatable attractions, yard games, live music, and family-friendly entertainment throughout the day. The New England Revolution mascot is also scheduled to make an appearance, while activities such as dance competitions and interactive games will help create a festival atmosphere between matches.
“I think having hundreds if not thousands of people together celebrating is very different than sitting in your living room,” David said.
The event is also expected to provide a significant economic boost to local businesses. Organizers are encouraging attendees to explore restaurants, shops, hotels, and attractions throughout the MetroWest region before and after visiting the Fan Zone.
“We’re really encouraging a stay-and-play attitude,” David said. “Come for the festival, spend several hours there, and then explore everything MetroWest has to offer.”
Local businesses will play a major role in the event, with many serving as vendors or sponsors. Organizers hope the Fan Zone will help introduce visitors to the region while generating increased traffic for restaurants, retailers, and other community businesses.
Admission to the Marlborough Fan Zone is free, although advance registration is required.
Those interested in attending can find schedules, parking information, event details, and registration links at the MetroWest Visitors Bureau’s World Cup information page.
As World Cup fever arrives in Massachusetts, organizers hope the Marlborough Fan Zone will provide a unique opportunity for residents and visitors alike to celebrate the global game while showcasing the best of the MetroWest region.
The Fan Zone is scheduled to open Thursday at Keller Field in Marlborough.
