MARLBORO, MASS. — What started as a local road race has grown into one of Marlborough’s signature summer events. The annual Running With the Wolves 5K and 10K will return to Kelleher Field on July 15, bringing together runners, walkers, local businesses, and community organizations for an evening focused on fitness and giving back.

According to race organizer Matt Betten, the event’s success stems from its strong community atmosphere and charitable mission. Proceeds from the race benefit the Marlborough Community Cupboard and the Hudson Food Pantry, organizations that have partnered with race organizers for nearly 15 years.

“We really focus it as a community race,” Betten said during a recent interview on The Zone. “People understand it’s for a good cause.”

Participants can choose between a 5K or 10K route, both of which begin at Kelleher Field before heading onto the scenic Assabet River Rail Trail. The paved course offers a mostly gradual downhill stretch on the way out, followed by a challenging uphill return that Betten jokingly describes as “sneaky.”

Beyond the race itself, attendees can expect a festival-like atmosphere. Organizers are planning food, music, local vendors, and beverage offerings throughout the evening. The Prospector will serve grilled food, while Smoothie King, Raising Cane’s, local breweries, and several other businesses will provide refreshments and samples.

Betten, who first participated in the race shortly after moving to Marlborough, says the event is about much more than running.

“If you want to come out and see what’s going on in the community and support a good cause, you’re going to have a good time,” he said.

Whether participants are chasing a personal best, walking with friends, or simply enjoying the festivities, Running With the Wolves promises another memorable summer evening in Marlborough.
