Medway girls’ tennis has completed a stunning rise from Division 3 also-ran to genuine contender. After posting a 10-6 regular-season record, the Mustangs earned the No. 15 seed out of 38 teams, an upper-percentile finish that contrasts sharply with a 1-15 mark just two years ago. Their turnaround began three seasons back with a 3-12 campaign, improved to 1-15, then jumped to 8-11 last year before this spring’s breakthrough. In the opening round, Medway faced No. 18 Watertown (12-8). The Raiders fought hard, but the Mustangs controlled four of five courts. The lone point Medway conceded came in a tight singles match; every other court leaned the Mustangs’ way. Highlighting the day was Medway’s second doubles duo, who dominated 6-0, 6-2. When the final ball dropped, Medway had captured a 4-1 victory, its first postseason win in several years. Buoyed by that success, the Mustangs now prepare for a daunting road test against No. 2 Saint John Paul II. Though Medway will enter as underdogs, the program’s steady climb, 3-12 to 1-15 to 8-11 to 10-6 with a playoff victory, shows they’re more than capable of rising to any challenge.
