By MyFM’s Claire Beverly – The Fruit Street Bridge in Hopkinton is going to be renamed for a local World War II hero. Major General Frank Dow Merrill was born in Hopkinton and educated at West Point and MIT. Among his many wartime accomplishments was leading a special ops unit which was known as “Merrill’s Marauders” which fought behind enemy lines. He later became the deputy U.S. Commander in Burma. In 2022 Merrill’s Marauders received a Congressional Gold Medal. HopNews reports that legislation has been filed to rename the Bridge in his honor and it could pass through the state house by December.
