FRANKLIN, Mass. — One of Franklin’s longest-running traditions returns this weekend as the Franklin Rod & Gun Club hosts its 90th Annual Fishing Derby, welcoming anglers of all ages to Uncas Pond for a day of fishing, family fun, and community spirit.

According to club president Marty Metras, the derby remains one of the oldest and largest annual events in Franklin and continues to draw families, children, and fishing enthusiasts from across the area.

“This is a great event for families, kids, and fishermen,” Metras said.

The derby is open to the public and will take place at the Franklin Rod & Gun Club, located at 53 Florence Street. Organizers recently stocked Uncas Pond with hundreds of trout, including rainbow, brook, and brown trout, along with a unique rainbow hybrid trout featuring a distinctive blue tint. The pond is also home to bass, pickerel, and sunfish, giving participants plenty of opportunities to reel in a memorable catch.

To participate, entry is $10, with cash prizes awarded for the largest fish caught and trophies presented to youth participants. Attendees can also purchase breakfast for an additional $5, with breakfast sandwiches available for those looking to grab a quick meal before heading to the water.

For newcomers or families without equipment, a limited supply of fishing rods, worms, and boats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Now entering its ninth decade, the Franklin Rod & Gun Club Fishing Derby remains a cherished local tradition that brings the community together while introducing new generations to the sport of fishing.
