HOPKINTON – The Fruit Street Bridge in Hopkinton will be named after a local World War II hero. Earlier this month, Governor Maura Healey signed legislation officially naming it the Major General Frank D. Merrill Memorial Bridge.

State Representative James Arena-DeRosa filed the bill and tells the Hopkinton Independent they hope to have the new signs installed and hold a dedication ceremony around Memorial Day 2027. Merrill commanded the volunteer Army special forces unit known as “Merrill’s Marauders,” which fought several battles in Burma during World War II.
