HOPKINTON – The Town of Hopkinton has terminated its contract with Flock Safety for the license plate reading cameras used by the Police Department.
The cameras have faced increased scrutiny nationally amid concerns about privacy and how information collected by the systems can be accessed and used by law enforcement agencies.
In a statement Thursday, the Town said it determined that “statutory deficiencies” make its agreement with Flock Safety unlawful under Massachusetts law. As a result, Hopkinton has terminated the contract.
The Town says the decision will also lead to a broader examination of technology currently being used by the Hopkinton Police Department. Officials say they plan to conduct a “broad review” of law enforcement technology to ensure its use complies with applicable laws and standards.
