The final round of group-stage play continued with several teams punching their tickets to the knockout stage, including Mexico, Brazil, Switzerland, and South Africa.
Switzerland secured a 2-1 victory over Canada to finish atop its group despite a late goal from Canadian striker Promise David. Bosnia and Herzegovina also closed group play on a high note with a 3-1 win over Qatar. Switzerland and Canada advance as the top two teams in the group, while Bosnia’s hopes now rest on qualifying as one of the best third-place finishers.
Morocco overcame an early scare against Haiti to earn a 4-2 victory. After falling behind, the Moroccans erupted with three goals in a five-minute span just before halftime to seize control of the match.
Brazil also wrapped up group play with a convincing 3-0 win over Scotland. Vinícius Jr. scored twice to lead the Seleção, helping Brazil edge Morocco for first place in the group on goal differential. Scotland’s hopes of advancing as a third-place team appear slim.
Mexico completed a perfect group stage by defeating Czechia 3-0, collecting all nine possible points to comfortably claim first place in Group A.
Meanwhile, South Africa earned one of the biggest victories in the nation’s World Cup history, upsetting South Korea 1-0 behind a man-of-the-match performance from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. The win sends South Africa to the knockout stage for the first time, while South Korea must now wait to see if it advances as a third-place qualifier.
