UPTON, MASS. — The Nipmuc Warriors saw their postseason run come to an end Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Apponequet Lakers, 3-0, in the MIAA Division 3 Round of 16.
In a game dominated by pitching, both teams struggled to generate offense through the first three innings. Nipmuc ace Charlotte Leitch and Apponequet standout Reese Taylor matched each other pitch for pitch, keeping the contest scoreless heading into the fourth inning.
The Lakers broke through in the bottom of the fourth, scoring all three of their runs in what proved to be the game’s decisive frame. Apponequet’s pitching and defense made the lead stand the rest of the way as the Warriors were unable to mount a comeback.
Leitch turned in another strong performance in the circle for Nipmuc, pitching all six innings, allowing just four hits while striking out 12. The Warriors kept the game within reach throughout the afternoon, but Apponequet was able to capitalize on its opportunities in the fourth to secure the victory.
Taylor was equally impressive for the Lakers, firing a complete-game shutout while allowing four hits and striking out eight batters. Despite putting runners on base, Nipmuc was unable to find the timely offense needed to break through against the Apponequet ace.
The loss ends another successful season for the Warriors, who battled until the final out in a tightly contested postseason pitchers’ duel. Apponequet advances to the quarterfinal round after earning the 3-0 victory.
