Nipmuc’s baseball team delivered a statement performance Monday afternoon, rolling past Burncoat 20-2 in a game that was one-sided from start to finish. The Warriors wasted no time taking control and never let the Patriots get back into the contest.
Josh Giancola had a huge day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and driving in five runs. Gavin Metcalf also had a strong game, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Zach Duplessis added another big offensive performance by going 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs. That trio helped Nipmuc pile up runs throughout the lineup and kept constant pressure on Burncoat.
The win was about as complete a season opener as Nipmuc could have hoped for, and it gives the Warriors an early boost heading into a rivalry matchup with Hopedale this afternoon at 4 p.m. Hopedale enters at 1-2 after a 15-11 loss to Oxford on Monday, but the Blue Raiders still feature dangerous bats in Noah Smith and Aiden Capello, both of whom drove in three runs in their last game. Smith also homered, which adds another layer to a matchup that should draw plenty of attention locally.
Nipmuc will look to carry the momentum from its explosive opener into another early-season test against a familiar rival.
