MASSACHUSETTS – A Massachusetts State Trooper is seriously injured following a crash Saturday afternoon on I-95 in Salisbury.

Police say the trooper had pulled over to clear a ladder that was blocking the left travel lane. After removing the debris, he returned to his cruiser and buckled his seatbelt. Moments later, another vehicle slammed into the back of the marked cruiser.

Authorities identified the driver as Josue Santana of Lawrence. He is now facing charges including negligent operation, speeding, using a mobile device while driving, and failing to move over for an emergency vehicle displaying flashing lights.

State Police emphasized that the trooper’s seatbelt likely prevented even more severe injuries. The crash serves as another reminder of Massachusetts’ “Move Over Law,” which requires drivers to slow down and shift lanes when approaching emergency vehicles stopped on the roadway.

Officials continue to investigate the incident.
