SPENCER – A member of the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (CEMLEC) SWAT team who is also a Millbury police officer is in stable condition after being shot during a tense standoff at a Spencer store Tuesday night.
Authorities say the CEMLEC SWAT team was called to the Family Dollar on West Main Street for a report of a man barricaded inside the store. During an exchange of gunfire, the suspect shot the SWAT officer three times. Police returned fire, and the suspect was shot and killed at the scene.
Investigators say the suspect was initially wanted in connection with an earlier shooting at a home in Spencer. The victim from that incident was transported to a hospital and remains under medical care.
State and local officials are continuing to investigate both incidents, and no additional details about the suspect or the injured officer have been released at this time.
