The Franklin Panthers continued their strong finish to the season with a 4-1 victory over Durfee in a Division 1 first-round playoff game on Sunday. After an 11-inning loss to Hopkinton in their regular-season finale, Franklin responded with a strong outing from ace Zach Winer. He threw six shutout innings and struck out six, holding Durfee’s lineup off balance. Franklin’s offense provided timely support. In the middle innings, Cole Sidwell delivered two run-scoring hits to build a lead, while Owen Pennini added an RBI single to extend the margin. The defense backed Winer with clean plays at every position, turning routine ground balls into outs and preserving the early cushion. Now, Franklin (14-6) travels to face No. 5 Xaverian Brothers, who edged Catholic Memorial 4-3 in their opener. Despite Xaverian’s 15-5 mark, Franklin’s recent momentum, balanced lineup, and bullpen depth give the Panthers confidence. The Hawks also came dangerously close to defeat against Catholic Memorial, something Franklin will look to capitalize on. Tuesday’s game at 4 PM at Xaverian High School will be a true measuring stick; victory there would mark a signature upset and further propel Franklin’s postseason run.
