The Nipmuc girls’ softball team suffered its first defeat of the season, falling 2-0 to St. Paul last night. Coming into the game unbeaten, the Warriors were stunned by a Knights squad that had dropped two straight before this upset. St. Paul played a disciplined brand of small ball, pushing across a run in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk by Kaitlyn Genduso and adding a critical insurance run in the sixth. Despite the modest deficit, the timing crushed Nipmuc’s comeback hopes, putting them down two runs before their final at-bats. St. Paul pitcher Bella Mara made sure there was no rally, spinning a complete game masterpiece: 7 innings, just 2 hits and 1 walk allowed, while striking out 14. Nipmuc will need to quickly regroup as they hit the road for a matchup with Sutton/Douglas tomorrow afternoon. Getting their offense back on track will be key as they look to start a new winning streak.
