A state-wide strike of Stop & Shop stores has been averted. On Friday officials announced a new deal between the Teamsters union and the supermarket chain, heading off a strike that threatened to have not just the 900 Teamsters at the Freetown Warehouse walk off but also the 30,000 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers honoring the picket lines. Details have not been released on the new six-year contract but the main issue had been health insurance. Stop and Shop says the deal “reduces operating costs while also providing a competitive wage package”.
