The opening day of the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered plenty of excitement as Mexico and South Korea each opened their tournaments with victories.
Mexico kicked off the World Cup on home soil with a commanding 2-0 win over South Africa in a match filled with drama. Three red cards were shown throughout the contest as tensions flared, but Mexico controlled much of the action, dominating possession and creating the better scoring opportunities on their way to securing all three points.
The day’s second match provided even more late excitement.
Czechia struck first with an early set-piece goal against South Korea, but the Koreans responded in the second half. After an entertaining back-and-forth battle, South Korea found the back of the net twice to earn a 2-1 comeback victory and begin their World Cup campaign on a winning note.
Attention now shifts to Day 2, which features the tournament debuts of co-host Canada and the United States.
Canada opens its World Cup journey at 3 p.m. against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Canadians will be without captain and star defender Alphonso Davies for at least their opening match, creating an early challenge for the host nation. Bosnia enters the tournament with confidence after claiming UEFA Playoff Spot A by defeating Italy in a penalty shootout, extending Italy’s shocking absence from the World Cup to three consecutive tournaments.
Later tonight, the United States takes center stage with a 9 p.m. matchup against Paraguay.
The Americans boast one of their most talented rosters in recent memory, featuring players competing for some of Europe’s top clubs. Leading the charge is AC Milan star Christian Pulisic, who will look to guide the U.S. through a challenging group stage.
Paraguay arrives in strong form but faces concerns regarding its top attacking threat, Julio Enciso. The standout forward suffered a muscle injury during a recent friendly and is expected to miss at least the opening match against the United States.
With both host nations in action and a packed schedule ahead, the excitement surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to build.
