The wait is finally over.
Four years after one of the most memorable World Cup Finals in soccer history, the 2026 FIFA World Cup officially begins today. This year’s tournament is historic in its own right, as the United States hosts the World Cup for just the second time, while Canada hosts for the first time and Mexico hosts for the third.
The last World Cup concluded with an instant classic in Qatar, where Argentina defeated France in a dramatic penalty shootout to capture its third World Cup title. The victory also delivered Lionel Messi his first World Cup championship, cementing his place among the greatest players the sport has ever seen.
Now, the world’s attention turns to North America as 48 nations begin their quest for soccer’s most coveted trophy.
Opening Day features two Group A matchups, beginning at 3 p.m. when Mexico takes on South Africa. Interestingly, these same two nations met in the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, hosted by South Africa. That match ended in a 1-1 draw but is best remembered for Siphiwe Tshabalala’s stunning goal, one of the most iconic opening-match goals in World Cup history.
The second match of the day kicks off at 10 p.m. as South Korea faces Czechia.
South Korea will once again draw attention thanks to longtime star Heung Min Son. While Son remains one of the most recognizable players in international soccer, his role may look different during this tournament. After leaving Tottenham Hotspur for Major League Soccer side LAFC in 2025, Son has continued to thrive, recording 32 goal contributions across his last two seasons in Los Angeles. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, he remains one of the tournament’s most exciting players to watch.
The opening day marks the beginning of a 39-day tournament that will culminate with the World Cup Final on July 19.
