The Egyptians struck early and controlled much of the match before an unfortunate own goal leveled the score at 1-1. Neither team could break the deadlock through extra time, and Egypt advanced after Australia missed two penalties in the shootout.
The match of the tournament so far belonged to Argentina and Cape Verde. The defending champions appeared in control with a 1-0 lead before Cape Verde’s Duarte forced extra time with a dramatic equalizer. Argentina regained the advantage, only for Cape Verde’s Cabral to answer with a stunning long-range strike. The Cinderella run finally came to an end in the 111th minute when Argentina scored the decisive goal to claim a thrilling 3-2 victory.
Colombia secured the final spot in the Round of 16 with a 1-0 win over Ghana. Jhon Arias scored in the 14th minute, and Colombia controlled possession and the flow of the match the rest of the way to see out the victory.
The Round of 16 begins today with two compelling matchups.
Canada takes on Morocco in Houston at 1 p.m., while giant-killer Paraguay, fresh off its upset of Germany, faces tournament favorite France in Philadelphia at 5 p.m.
