MEDWAY – The Medway Fire Department is reminding residents to use lithium-ion batteries safely as battery-related fires continue to increase.
Lithium-ion batteries power many everyday devices, including cell phones, laptops, e-bikes, and electric scooters. Fire officials warn that damaged or improperly charged batteries can fail without warning, causing intense fires that spread rapidly and are difficult to extinguish.
The department recommends using only safety-certified batteries, charging devices with the manufacturer’s approved charger, and always charging batteries on a hard, flat surface. Officials also caution against charging devices on beds, couches, or underneath pillows, where heat can quickly build up and create a fire hazard.
