HOPKINTON – Hopkinton officials say the town’s new ban on the sale of kratom products is expected to have little impact on most residents.
Last week, the town approved a prohibition on the sale of both kratom and synthetic THC products. Kratom is a naturally occurring substance that can act as either a stimulant or a sedative, but it has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
According to the Hopkinton Independent, Health Director Shaun McAuliffe said very few retailers in Hopkinton were selling kratom before the ban took effect. He added that the measure aligns with the town’s participation in the federal Drug-Free Communities grant program.
