FRANKLIN – Franklin Police are reminding riders that not all electric bikes are treated the same under Massachusetts law.
Officials say motorized bikes that exceed the speed limits of traditional pedal-assist bicycles require a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration, and a moped license plate.
Police also note that these motorized bikes are prohibited from sidewalks, dirt paths, and school fields. They may only be operated on public roads, bike lanes, and shared paved pathways.
Residents who are unsure how their bike is classified are encouraged to review the department’s guidance on its social media pages before enforcement efforts begin.
