Volunteers Restore Bleachers at Historic Soldiers Field

DOUGLAS – A piece of Douglas history received some much-needed attention recently as local volunteers spent a full day repairing bleachers at Soldiers Field that were in need of improvements.

According to McGoldrick Property Services LLC, the bleachers had been in need of repair, but the local Parks and Recreation Department had not had the time to complete the work. Picnic at the Park Founder/CEO Rhoda Lanes reached out to McGoldrick Property Services about potentially taking on the project. Lanes then received the necessary approval during a meeting before giving McGoldrick Property Services the go-ahead to begin the repairs.

Lanes and McGoldrick Property Services purchased the lumber, nails and other materials necessary for the project. The McGoldrick Property Services crew (Matt McGoldrick and Tobias Aharonian, “Tobi” for short) then volunteered approximately eight hours at the field, rebuilding and repairing the bleachers with an emphasis on making the seating safer for the community.

The project also helped preserve an important piece of Douglas history. Soldiers Field has long served as a community gathering place and, according to McGoldrick Property Services, even hosted an exhibition baseball game involving the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.

“This wasn’t about getting paid. It wasn’t about recognition…” said McGoldrick Property Services LLC owner Matt McGoldrick, who was on-site during the reconstruction. “…It was about seeing something in our community that needed attention and deciding to take action.”

The locally owned property service and landscaping company has more than 20 years of experience and is also involved in supporting youth sports programs and charitable causes.

The volunteers hope their work at Soldiers Field encourages others to continue investing time and effort into preserving and improving community spaces throughout Douglas.
