FRAMINGHAM — The MetroWest YMCA is recognizing National Water Safety Month this May by promoting safe swimming habits and raising awareness about drowning prevention ahead of the summer season.

As part of the YMCA of the USA’s national Phones Down, Eyes Up™ campaign, the organization is encouraging families to stay attentive around water and designate a “Water Watcher” whenever inexperienced swimmers are nearby.

The MetroWest YMCA will host several free educational events throughout May, including a Backyard Pool and Waterfront Safety talk on May 11 at its Framingham Branch and a water safety demonstration at the Clearbrook Swim Club on May 23.

“We’ve all been in the position where we think a quick check of the cell phone won’t hurt, but the truth is drowning accidents can happen silently, and in as little as 30 seconds,” said David Witkus, Senior Director of Aquatics for the MetroWest YMCA.

According to the organization, swim lessons and water safety education remain key tools in reducing drowning risks, especially for children. The YMCA offers swim lessons for all ages and uses sliding-scale fees to help ensure access regardless of financial circumstances.

“Learning to swim is a lifelong skill, both for safety and for staying healthy,” said MetroWest YMCA COO Jeanne Sherlock.
