MILFORD – Local first responders recently took part in a unique training designed to help them better understand and assist individuals living with dementia.
The program, held at the Milford Fire Department, featured a Dementia Experience Class that gave participants hands-on insight into the challenges many older adults face while living with dementia. Through interactive activities and educational sessions, attendees learned how to recognize common signs and symptoms and better understand how dementia can affect a person’s daily life.

Organizers say the training is especially important because firefighters, EMTs, and other first responders are often among the first people to interact with seniors during emergencies. A greater understanding of dementia can help improve communication, safety, and compassion during those critical moments.
The event also highlighted the ongoing effort to create a more dementia-friendly community by equipping first responders with the tools and knowledge needed to better serve residents and their families.
Officials thanked all of the firefighters, EMTs, and first responders who participated, noting that their commitment to continued learning will have a positive impact throughout the community.
