FRANKLIN – The Franklin Public Library served as the backdrop for a historic moment Monday as Governor Maura Healey signed Massachusetts’ new Freedom to Read law.
The new law establishes statewide standards governing how public and school libraries select and review materials. It also establishes a process for community members to raise concerns about library materials while reinforcing local decision-making.
Franklin provided a fitting location for the signing because the Franklin Public Library is recognized as the nation’s first public lending library, giving the ceremony an added connection to the history of public access to books and information.
