MILFORD — While summer camp may be underway for local children, the Milford Youth Center is making sure there’s something for everyone this summer, offering a variety of recreational programs designed to keep residents active, connected, and out of the heat.
Known primarily for its after-school programming during the academic year, the Milford Youth Center transforms into a hub for families and the broader community during the summer months. According to Assistant Director Emily Steenstra, the center’s mission goes beyond serving children by creating opportunities for residents of all ages to stay engaged.
“We really try to serve as many parts of the community as possible while still sticking to our mission of providing a safe place for kids during the high-risk hours year-round,” Steenstra said.
The Youth Center’s annual summer camp begins July 6 after reaching full capacity, continuing a tradition that has become a favorite for local families. Registration opens every February, and many campers return year after year until they age out of the program at 14 years old.
Each week features a different theme along with four field trips to destinations such as Fino Pool, Bellingham Town Beach, Urban Air, and other local attractions. On-site days include special performances and activities, giving campers an opportunity to build friendships while exploring everything the Milford community has to offer.
While camp is reserved for children, several recreational opportunities are available for teens, adults, and seniors throughout July.
The Youth Center recently reopened after construction and has resumed its popular Adult Open Gym Basketball program on Mondays and Fridays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The pickup-style games welcomed more than 138 participants during the last fiscal year and provide an opportunity for former Youth Center members, college students, and community residents to stay active. Admission is $5 for Milford residents and $8 for non-residents.
The center is also bringing back Open Gym Pickleball on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Temporary court lines will be used throughout the summer before permanent pickleball courts are installed later this August. Three courts will be available each week, giving players a comfortable indoor option during the hottest months of the year.
For older residents, the Youth Center offers Senior Walking Hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, allowing seniors to safely exercise indoors in an air-conditioned gym equipped with seating for rest breaks.
Steenstra said one of the biggest benefits of the summer programming is providing a welcoming place where residents can remain active regardless of age.
“It’s really great to see that full circle,” she said, referring to former Youth Center participants who now return as young adults to play basketball, volunteer, or stay involved with the organization.
Beyond recreation, the Milford Youth Center is also seeking volunteers to assist with programs throughout the year. Volunteer opportunities are available for individuals of all ages looking to give back to the community.
