MILFORD — Looking for a fun way to stay active this summer? The Milford Youth Center is inviting community members to hit the courts during its July Open Gym program, featuring weekly basketball and pickleball sessions.
Basketball Open Gym will take place on Mondays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on July 6, 13, 20, and 27, while Pickleball Open Gym is scheduled for Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on July 8, 15, 22, and 29.
The program is open to players of all skill levels. Basketball will feature pickup-style games, while pickleball players can enjoy multiple courts with staff helping coordinate fair rotations throughout the evening.
According to Milford Youth Center Director Jen Ward, the program also offers a welcome escape from the summer heat.
“We are getting pickleball lines permanently put down at the end of the summer, but we have temporary lines now and a gym with air conditioning for those who want to be out of the heat,” Ward said.
Milford residents can participate for $5 per week, while out-of-town participants pay $8 per week. Pickleball paddles are available to rent for $3, though quantities are limited.
Staff members will oversee court rotations to ensure everyone gets a chance to play. Games will be played to 11 points, with winners staying on the court while challengers rotate in. Participants must also complete a waiver before taking part.
With indoor, air-conditioned facilities and permanent pickleball courts on the way later this summer, the Milford Youth Center hopes the July Open Gyms will provide a fun and welcoming environment for the community to stay active, meet new people, and enjoy two of the area’s most popular sports.
