SOUTHBOROUGH – A Southborough Police detective is being recognized for helping dismantle a nationwide fraud scheme that targeted elderly victims.
Detective Anthony Vega assisted in a federal investigation that led to charges against six people accused of stealing millions of dollars from victims across the country.
The investigation began locally after Vega worked with an 81-year-old Southborough woman who had been convinced she won a large sweepstakes prize but was told she first had to pay taxes and fees. Authorities say she ultimately lost nearly $85,000 before the scam was uncovered.
Federal prosecutors allege the suspects collectively defrauded elderly victims nationwide of millions of dollars.
