MEDWAY – The Medway Fire Department spent much of Wednesday responding to an incident at the Grid LLC Battery Energy Storage System after a main transformer malfunctioned.

Fire officials say crews were called to the facility around 8:30 a.m. and discovered that the main transformer was actively leaking oil. One employee working at the site suffered an injury, though officials have not released details about the extent of those injuries.

According to the department, the leaking substance was FR3 insulating mineral oil, a biodegradable and non-toxic product commonly used in electrical equipment. Officials emphasized there was no threat to public safety. A specialized environmental cleanup contractor was brought in to handle the spill, while representatives from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection monitored the cleanup efforts.
