HOPEDALE, MASS. — Hopedale continued its postseason march on Tuesday, defeating Hopkins Academy 8-0 in the Round of 16 of the MIAA Division 5 Softball Tournament behind a dominant pitching performance from Emily Atwood and a balanced offensive attack.
Atwood was in complete control from the circle, tossing a four-hit shutout while striking out seven batters over seven innings. The Blue Raiders’ ace consistently worked out of trouble and kept Hopkins Academy off the scoreboard throughout the contest.
Hopedale took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning and gradually pulled away as the game progressed. The Blue Raiders broke things open late, scoring five combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.
Mia Casey paced the offense from the leadoff spot, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Lucy Mandeville delivered the biggest offensive performance of the day, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs to help fuel the Blue Raiders’ attack.
Hopedale’s lineup produced timely hits throughout the afternoon, providing plenty of support for Atwood’s standout effort in the circle.
With the victory, the Blue Raiders advance to the Division 5 quarterfinals and move one step closer to a state championship. They will face the winner of Granby and Holbrook, who play later this afternoon.
