GRAFTON — As town officials work to close a projected $1.4 million budget deficit for next year, student athletic fees are being discussed as a possible cost-saving measure.
According to The Community Advocate, while the town may ultimately seek a voter-approved override, the School Committee has been reviewing contingency plans in case an override does not pass. One proposal includes charging students to participate in school sports.
In many neighboring districts, athletic fees range from $200 to $300 per student. Supporters say the fees could help offset rising costs, while opponents argue the added expense could force some students to give up sports altogether.
Town officials continue to evaluate options as budget discussions move forward.
