MEDWAY — Police are urging residents to be on high alert following a recent rise in smash-and-grab car break-ins around town. They say crooks are breaking into parked vehicles to steal purses, wallets, and checkbooks so they can use your ID and checks to commit bank fraud and steal your money.

According to detectives, suspects are targeting parking areas where personal items may be left in cars, like gyms, daycares, parks, and shopping centers. Police strongly advise residents not to leave valuables in their vehicles. If it’s unavoidable, officers say items should be stored completely out of sight.

Residents who discover their vehicle has been broken into should immediately call police and notify their bank and credit card company to help prevent further fraud.
