MILFORD – The 125-year-old Turtle Tavern building has been demolished following the massive fire Monday that destroyed the landmark structure in downtown Milford.

Fire Chief Mark Nelson said the blaze spread so quickly that firefighters could do little more than contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to nearby buildings. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by local officials and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Jamie Tourtellot, whose father owns the tavern, told the Daily News he’s unsure what comes next for the business but expressed gratitude that all staff, tenants, and pets escaped unharmed.

A Milford police officer who assisted with evacuations was treated for smoke inhalation, officials said.
