Born on February 13, 1933, in Plainfield, New Jersey, Sylvia was the daughter of the late Floyd and Hazel Sears. She was also predeceased by her brother, Richard Sears.
Sylvia shared 71 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Nelson P. Ball. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, service, and community.
She was a devoted mother to Cathy Ball and her wife Wendy Bell of Arlington, Amy Harned and her husband Dave of Norwich, Connecticut, Nancy Mullen and her husband Matthew of East Brookfield, Jim Ball and his partner Spun of Westborough, and Dan Ball and his wife Cheryl of Sudbury. She was also a cherished grandmother to Matthew, Ryan, AJ, Katelynn, and Ava, and a proud great-grandmother to Raegan, Erin, Patrick, Delaney, and Natalie. Sylvia also leaves behind her beloved “adopted” grandchildren, Bos and May.
Sylvia attended Upsala College, where she met Nelson while singing in the college choir. She was also a member of the marching band and served as Drum Majorette.
A woman of deep faith, Sylvia was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church, where she served in numerous leadership roles, including as Church Lay Leader. Her commitment to serving others extended throughout the community. She was a founding member of the Westborough Food Pantry and helped establish both the Westborough YWCA and the Fay Mountain Recreation Corporation.
Sylvia had a special connection to Stowe, Vermont, where she spent many summers throughout her life. She loved camping with her family, traveling throughout the United States and abroad, and spending time in Orleans on Cape Cod. She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed entertaining friends and family, and loved playing tennis.
A talented decorative painter, Sylvia was a member of the Yankee Heritage Tole Painters for 25 years. Her beautiful artwork continues to adorn the homes of family members and serves as a lasting reminder of her creativity and love.
Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to Agatha Bleboo, Sylvia’s longtime caregiver and friend, as well as the compassionate staff of Gentiva Hospice for their exceptional care and support.
Sylvia will be remembered for her generosity, creativity, faith, and the boundless love she shared with everyone around her.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 17th from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Pickering & Son Westborough Funeral Home, located at 62 West Main Street in Westborough.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 18th at 10:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church, located at 120 West Main Street in Westborough, followed by a reception.
A private interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sylvia’s memory may be made to the Westborough Food Pantry.
Sylvia’s legacy of faith, service, and love will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
