Sara E. Schulman, 77, of Hopedale
1958 - 2026

Sara grew up with a strong sense of determination and a warmth that touched everyone around her. A standout athlete, particularly in basketball, she carried the same energy, discipline, and teamwork from the court into every aspect of her life. She graduated from Hopedale High School, where she was admired for both her academic and athletic accomplishments, as well as her selflessness and commitment to her community.

She took great pride in her hometown of Hopedale and could often be seen enjoying all it had to offer—walking through town, visiting the library, park, and gym, and attending Sacred Heart Church. She especially enjoyed quiet moments reading on her porch while watching the swans and ducklings at Hopedale Pond.

Sara pursued her passion for helping others by earning her nursing degree from Fitchburg State University. She went on to dedicate more than 40 years as a cardiac nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital. Known for her professionalism, compassion, and calm presence, she earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and patients alike. Her commitment to excellence and genuine care defined her career.

Her life was deeply enriched by her love for her family and her pride in her Scottish heritage. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca A. Schulman of Waltham, and her son, Daniel M. Schulman of Framingham. She also leaves behind her brother, Charles J. Mattie and his wife Cheryl of Hopedale; her nephews, Charles R. Mattie and his wife Amanda and Shaun Connor and his wife Allysse; her niece, Shannon Oertle and her husband Jeff; several cousins; and a close family friend, Anthony Gremo.

Outside of her professional life, Sara enjoyed traveling, exploring new places, and continuing to learn about the world. She found great comfort and companionship in her animals, especially her beloved cats, reflecting the kindness and gentleness at the core of who she was.

Sara will be remembered for her warmth, wit, and generosity of spirit. She had a remarkable ability to make others feel cared for, valued, and understood. Her life and legacy will be cherished by all who knew and loved her.
