Rosa Gloria Fontes, 104, of Milford

Mrs. Rosa Gloria Fontes, 104, of Milford MA died Thursday evening (March 28, 2024) at her residence surrounded by her loving family after a period of declining health. She was the beloved wife of the late Joao Alves Tomas.

Rosa was born in Cambeses Portugal, the daughter of the late Jose Joaquim Fontes and the late Rosa (Casellas) Fontes. She attended school in Portugal as a young girl and had worked on the family farm in Portugal where she performed all kinds of chores, including herding cattle & sheep.

Rosa came to the United States in 1978, settling in Milford MA. She was a devoted mother & grandmother, serving as a “Nanny” for her grandchildren, as well as many other children that were part of the Portuguese community in Milford.

Her Catholic faith was very important to Rosa. She was an extremely pious woman who loved going to church and also loved to spend time reading the Bible. She was a very loving, caring & nurturing woman. She also took great pride in her Portuguese heritage and loved to cook her Portuguese cuisine. Rosa also loved to tend to her garden.

Rosa is survived by her 3 children: Joao Tomas and his wife Maria Gil Tomas of Portugal, Bento Tomas and his wife Gloria Gil Tomas of Portugal and Maria Goncalves of Milford MA; her 8 grandchildren: Helena Lopes of Milford MA, Paul Tomas of Milford MA, Jose Tomas of Portugal, Jose “Joe” Goncalves Jr. and his wife Theresa of Milford MA,Rosinha Tomas of Portugal, Moses Goncalves of Milford MA, Paulo Tomas of Portugal and Tony Tomas of Hopedale MA; also several great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews.

Rosa was the sister of the late Anna Fontes; the late Maria Fontes; the late Isabel Fontes; the late Louisa Fontes and the late Gracinda Fontes. Rosa was also the mother-in-law of the late Jose B. Goncalves of Milford MA who died March 22nd .

Her funeral will be held Wednesday (April 3rd) from the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, 44 Congress Street, Milford MA followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00PM in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 19 Winter Street, Milford MA. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Milford MA. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday (April 3rd) from 10:30am to 12:30am at the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, prior to her Funeral Mass.
