
1935 - 2026
Ray began a remarkable military journey when he proudly joined the United States Air Force in 1952. His early career saw him serving as a Radio Operator aboard B-29 and B-36 aircraft, before transitioning to the B-52 as a Tail Gunner. Over the course of more than 32 years of dedicated service, Ray advanced through the enlisted ranks, ultimately achieving the highest possible enlisted rank in the Air Force, Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt).
He concluded his distinguished career as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for the 8th Air Force at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, and later continued his service at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York. Throughout his career, Ray was known for his leadership, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to those he served alongside.
Ray is survived by his three children: daughter Debbie Prusak and her husband Ken of Colorado Springs, Colorado; son Barry Shugrue and his partner Chris Durant of Sterling, Connecticut; and son Rob Shugrue and his partner Jeanne Fico of Seymour, Connecticut. He was a proud grandfather to Sean, Treci, Kayleigh, Eric, Emily, Teresa, Andrew P., and Kayleigh P., and a loving great-grandfather to Cole, Morgan, Cameron, Evee, Jocelyn, Kieran, Elias, and Madilyn. He also leaves behind his faithful canine companion, Patty.
Raymond will be remembered with deep respect and admiration for his lifelong service to his country, his steadfast love for his family, and the enduring legacy of leadership and loyalty he leaves behind.
Visiting Hours will be held Thursday, January 22, 2026 from 4:00–7:00 pm at the BUMA Funeral Home, 101 N. Main Street, Uxbridge, and Friday morning from 10:30 am to 11:30 am, with a Funeral Service to follow at 11:30 am at the Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Granite Street, Uxbridge.
