Born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Ray was the son of the late Willis and Mildred (Risto) Welcher. During his early years, he lived in Kansas and New Jersey before eventually returning to Michigan.
Ray proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and was deployed to the Philippines. Following his military service, he earned a degree in electrical engineering from Michigan State University. He went on to work for General Electric and later for United Shoe Machinery Corporation.
Ray was known as a lifelong tinkerer who enjoyed building, repairing, and creating projects in his workshop. He was also an avid reader with a special interest in history. Together, Ray and Helen traveled extensively and treasured time spent at their lake house in New Hampshire. They also shared a love for the theatre and symphony performances.
A devoted Michigan State sports fan, Ray rarely missed watching a football or basketball game on television.
He is survived by his children, Ray Willis Welcher and his wife Catherine (Bidese) of St. John, Indiana; Curtis Welcher and his wife Cheryl (Wagner) of Westborough; and Charles Welcher of Davie, Florida.
Ray was a proud and loving “Grampie” to six grandchildren and their spouses: Kimberly and her husband Connor, PJ and his wife Suzanne, Jessica and her husband Andy, Alex, Andrew, and Nara. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Walter and Riley.
In addition to his wife and parents, Ray was predeceased by his half-brother, Floyd, and his sister, Norma Kerlikowske Shands.
