Michael W. Smith, Sr., 69, of Upton
1956 - 2026

Michael was born in Framingham, the son of the late Clyde Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth (Pierce) Smith. He grew up in Upton, where he was raised and educated, and was a graduate of Nipmuc Regional High School, Class of 1974.

For much of his working life, Michael was employed at Bay State Abrasives in Westborough for 28 years. After retiring from that position, he pursued further education, earning a degree in HVAC Services, and continued working in the field with All Temp Systems Mechanical HVAC and CGIT.

Outside of work, Michael enjoyed a variety of pastimes. He loved hunting, fishing, and gambling—especially scratch tickets. One of his favorite places to be was “the camp,” where you could almost always find him sitting by the fire. He was also well known for his legendary appetite, famously able to out-eat just about anyone when it came to lobster.

Michael had an outgoing personality and had the gift of gab. Anyone who ran into him at Honey Farms was likely to be an hour late to wherever they were headed, thanks to his easy conversation and friendly nature.

Above all else, Michael treasured his family. He especially adored his grandchildren, and nothing brought a bigger smile to his face than a hug from Matthew and Keagan.

He is survived by his two sons, Paul Smith of Upton and Michael Smith, Jr. and his wife Heather of Uxbridge; his two grandchildren, Matthew and Keagan Smith; his siblings, Althea Greene of Upton, Christopher Smith of Auburn, and Jeffrey Smith of Maine; his sister-in-law, Janet Smith of Webster; many nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Kathi Smith of Upton.

In addition to his parents, Michael was predeceased by his siblings, Albert Smith and Betty Carol.

Calling hours will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, at the Pickering & Son Upton Funeral Home, 45 Main Street, Upton. A prayer and remembrance service will follow at 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael’s memory may be sent to the Make-A-Wish Foundation via Make-A-Wish America.
