1932 - 2026
Born in Worcester on May 12, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Eva (Borden) Monroe.
Marylis lived a life centered around family, faith, and caring for others. She was known for her gentle spirit, warm smile, and thoughtful nature — qualities that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
She was the beloved wife of the late David L. Burgess, who passed away in 2022. Together, they shared nearly 70 years of marriage filled with love, devotion, and cherished memories.
Marylis is survived by her children: Daniel L. Burgess and Melanie Mancini of Longs, South Carolina; Stephen P. Burgess of Uxbridge; and Susan M. Burgess of Whitinsville. She also leaves behind her sister, Naomi Curry of Pennsylvania; her twin sister, Marylin Mercier of Littleton; her sister-in-law, Beatrice Burgess of Cumberland, Rhode Island; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved cats, Jacob and Joseph.
Throughout her life, Marylis dedicated herself to helping others. She worked at the former Whitinsville Hospital and later at Milford VNA as a certification specialist in medical billing, where she was respected for her compassion and professionalism. Earlier in life, she also worked at the former Bernat’s Mill in Uxbridge. Following retirement, she became a greeter at Walmart, where her kindness and welcoming personality brightened the days of countless customers.
Marylis and her husband David enjoyed traveling and camping with their family for many years, creating memories across the country, including trips to Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, and Greece. She loved supporting her children and grandchildren in their athletic activities and especially enjoyed field hockey.
Her faith was an important part of her life. A lifelong member of North Uxbridge Baptist Church/Cornerstone Church, she was active in the Women’s Fellowship and treasured the friendships she built through her church community.
Above all, Marylis loved spending time with family, sharing laughter with her sisters, enjoying good food, homemade sweets, and the simple moments that made life meaningful.
