Joseph G. Wilcox, 81, of Hopkinton
1945 - 2026

Joe served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era and was stationed in Korea as a medical corpsman in charge of a psychiatric unit. After his military service, he earned a degree in political science from Boston State College and continued his education through postgraduate studies at Northeastern University and Boston University. He had a particular interest in Middle Eastern studies, history, archaeology, anthropology, and international relations, and enjoyed traveling to Turkey and Syria to visit historic sites.

Joe worked for 39 years on an inpatient psychiatric unit at HRI-Arbour Hospital in Brookline. He met his wife, Sharon, there in 1986, and they began their life together in Newton before marrying in 1990. The couple moved to Hopkinton in 2022.

Joe enjoyed spending time outdoors, particularly tending to his yard, and collected seashells from places including Cape Cod, Virgin Gorda, and Siesta Key. He was an avid reader with a lifelong curiosity about history, politics, science, other cultures, and human nature. He especially enjoyed the science fiction works of Isaac Asimov and was known for his thoughtful perspectives and quiet, unassuming nature.

In addition to his wife, Sharon Reynolds, Joe is survived by his beloved husky, Kaya; his sister, Linda Carey and her husband, Frank; his brother-in-law, Bill Reynolds and his wife, Joyce; his sister-in-law, Nancy Reynolds; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was predeceased by his sister, Priscilla Wood, and his niece, Colleen Young.

A private celebration of Joe’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe’s memory to the American Heart Association or the American Stroke Association.
