Born in Waltham, James was the son of the late James F. and Evelyn A. (Carr) Culhane. He was raised and educated in South Boston and graduated from Weymouth North High School. He later earned his bachelor’s degree in Plastics Engineering from UMass Lowell.
James built a successful career as a plastics engineer in the biomedical field, working for companies including Abiomed, Boston Scientific, and AngioDynamics, among others.
He was actively involved in sports throughout his life. James participated in the Men’s Hockey League at North Star, both played and followed hockey at the New England Sports Center, and was a member of the Westborough Men’s Softball League. He also dedicated time to coaching softball and supporting youth athletics through Westborough Youth Soccer, Minute Man Flames, and Tri-Boro Hockey. In addition, he served on the Advisory Board at UMass Lowell for Plastics Engineering.
In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by his two daughters, Marion C. Fisher and her husband Brian of Westborough, and Elizabeth M. Surber and her husband Mac of Westborough. He is also survived by his niece Regis Cain and her son Conall Cain; his five grandchildren, Michael Fisher, Mary Jane Fisher, Kenny Surber, Evelyn Surber, and Eleanor Surber; his mother-in-law, Lorraine M. Thompson; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also leaves behind his wife’s beloved dog, “Bucky F. Dent.”
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 7 at 10:30 AM at St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 70 West Main Street, Westborough. A reception lunch will follow at Arturo’s Restaurant on East Main Street in Westborough.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 6 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Pickering & Son Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main Street, Westborough.
