Fred was the beloved son of the late Fred B. and Alice M. (Lajoi) Schaffert, Sr. He shared 54 years of marriage with his devoted wife, Kathleen A. (Zickus) Schaffert, building a life rooted in respect, love, and partnership. Together they raised two children, Gregory B. Schaffert and his wife Gerri Ann of West Bridgewater, and Stephanie A. Schaffert of Waltham. Fred took immense pride in his role as a grandfather to Rachael A. Schaffert and Laura A. Schaffert, who brought him great joy.
He is also survived by his sister, Linda Hendricks and her husband Russell of Bartlett, Illinois, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins who will remember him for his steady guidance and gentle presence.
Fred was a proud graduate of Loyola University of Chicago, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era and was highly decorated for his service, earning the Bronze Star, Silver Star, Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Air Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star, and two Overseas Bars.
Following his military service, Fred built a successful career in manufacturing. His professional journey included work at ITT in Cambridge, Bueller Motor, and most recently Thermal Fisher in Milford, where his dedication and strong work ethic were deeply respected by colleagues.
Outside of work, Fred embraced life fully. He loved traveling and explored much of the world, with a particular fondness for Europe. He was an active member of the United Parish in Upton and the VFW in Upton, reflecting his lifelong commitment to community and service. Fred also volunteered his time at the Milford Food Pantry, quietly helping others with compassion and humility.
Woodworking was one of Fred’s greatest joys. Through this craft, he expressed creativity and care, often gifting handmade pieces to family and friends that will remain cherished reminders of his talent and love.
