Ed’s life reflected dedication, loyalty, and a quiet joy in simple pleasures. After graduating from Uxbridge High School, Ed earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from University of Massachusetts-Amherst. While at UMASS, Ed was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and freshman baseball. His professional path began shortly after college, working for the former State Mutual Life where he held various cost and investment accounting positions and for the Knights of Columbus headquarters in New Haven, CT as Assistant Controller responsible for investment accounting and reporting. Even in retirement, Ed continued to lend his expertise through contract work and later as staff accountant for the International Golf Club, a job he described as an excellent job with great benefits.
Ed’s service extended beyond the workplace. He was a third degree Knight of Columbus, a member of K of C headquarters council and he served six years in the Massachusetts National Guard. Ed was a regular member of St. Mary Church in Uxbridge, MA.
Those closest to him will remember Ed for the joy he found in everyday moments—frisbee and biking on Cape Cod, the Sunday family dinners Priscilla cooked or son Steven grilled, playing scrabble with the grandkids on long Winter afternoons, and most of all the love he poured into family traditions like hosting movies in his cherished “Theatre by the Canal.” He and Priscilla, High School sweethearts and soulmates who recently celebrated their fifty-seventh wedding anniversary, shared a lifetime of adventures, from summers in Orleans to Disney trips, cross-country travel, and winter escapes to New Smyrna Beach, FL.
Ed took great pride in supporting his children and grandchildren, faithfully cheering for every sport and milestone. He was there for Steven’s playing for Northbridge’s crackerjack football team, Gregg’s playing for Sutton’s championship soccer team, attending Claes’ Madison, NJ ice hockey games, Martin’s tennis pursuits, and Nicole’s playing for the champion Millbury volleyball team with Nicole recognized as a first team Central Mass All-Star.
He delighted in celebrating academic and professional accomplishments, too—especially Allison’s professional teaching career and grandson Thomas, whose writing achievements he praised with pride.
Of all his passions, golf held a special place in Ed’s heart. He initiated and directed the annual headquarters council golf tournament for the benefit of local charities and played in several regional leagues. His love for the sport led to unforgettable memories, including attending two Masters Tournaments with son Steven, visits to Pebble Beach Golf Links twice with son Gregg, and his remarkable hole-in-one on the fourteenth hole of Harbour Town Golf Links, once named “The Most Difficult Hole on the PGA Tour.”
Ed is survived by his wife, Priscilla J. (Tancrell) Machacz, his sons Steven E. Machacz of Uxbridge and Gregg P. Machacz of Madison, NJ, Gregg’s wife Susanne Fausing Machacz, and grandchildren Allison, Nicole, Thomas, Claes and Martin Machacz. He is also survived by sister-in-law Patricia Flynn and her husband Michael of Duxbury, brothers-in-law Roger Tancrell of Duxbury and Fr. Luke Tancrell of Columbus, OH.
He will be dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is at peace. The family kindly declines flowers and donations, but prayers and kind thoughts are appreciated. A special thank you to the staff at Dana Farber and Salmon Hospice for their kind words, presence, and compassionate care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, December 20, 2025 at 10:00 am at Saint Mary's Church, 77 Mendon Street, Uxbridge. Burial will follow at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Granite Street, Uxbridge.
