NORTHBRIDGE — The Whitin Community Center is expanding its child care services through renovations of a historic building tied to its roots.
Executive Director Heather Elster announced that work has begun on the former brick schoolhouse on Hill Street, built in 1890 by the Whitin family, who operated the Cotton Mill and Machine Works. The Whitins established the WCC in the 1920s to benefit local residents.
The WCC purchased the building from the Town of Northbridge last summer for $50,000. Renovations are now underway to prepare the space for expanded child care programs.
