WESTBOROUGH – Some Westborough High School students are asking Town Meeting voters to consider lowering the Town’s voting age to 16.
According to the Community Advocate, four students have submitted a Home Rule Petition arguing that 16- and 17-year-olds deserve a voice in local decision-making. They point out that in other legal circumstances, 16-year-olds are treated as adults — including working and paying taxes — and say local voting rights should reflect that responsibility.
The petition is scheduled to be voted on at Town Meeting on March 21. If approved by voters, it would then move to the Select Board before being submitted to the state legislature for consideration.
