HOPKINTON – Hopkinton voters will gather for a Special Town Meeting on December 4 to make adjustments to the town’s fiscal year 2026 operating budget—this time to lower it.
The Select Board approved the meeting after the town’s Chief Financial Officer explained that the budget passed in May was based on early estimates. As officials prepared to set the tax rate for the coming year, they determined that less funding is actually needed, prompting a move to reduce the previously approved spending plan before taxes are assessed.
According to town officials, the two major areas coming in lower than expected are interest on debt payments and town employee health insurance costs, both of which contributed to the decision to revise the budget downward.
The Special Town Meeting will allow residents to formally approve the adjustment before tax bills are finalized.
