UPTON – An off-duty firefighter helped Upton police catch an alleged arsonist after spotting a fire as it was starting near the Peppercorn Hill parking area along Crockett Road. Authorities say Firefighter Matthew Kerr noticed the blaze and used his vehicle to position himself in a way that prevented the suspect from fleeing the scene.

Police say Cameron Griffin was arrested at the scene and is charged with unlawful burning, disorderly conduct, and child endangerment, after investigators learned he allegedly had a child in his car at the time of the incident.

In addition, officials say investigators are now looking into Griffin’s possible connection to other fires reported in the area over the past six months. The investigation remains ongoing.
