Northborough-Southborough, MA – The Northborough-Southborough School Committee has officially approved a new set of graduation requirements to replace the MCAS-based criteria previously in place.
Following last year’s statewide election decision to eliminate MCAS as a graduation requirement, local school districts have been tasked with creating their own competency determinations for students to earn a diploma.
According to the Community Advocate, the newly adopted graduation criteria for Northborough-Southborough students include:
- 20 English credits
- 10 health and fitness credits
- 2.5 economics credits
- Passing ninth- and tenth-grade English
- Passing an early-level math course
- Passing a core science curriculum course, which can be chemistry, biology, or physics
School officials believe these new requirements will ensure students are prepared for post-secondary education and the workforce while maintaining academic rigor in the absence of MCAS-based benchmarks.
For more details on the new graduation standards, students and parents are encouraged to review district communications and attend upcoming school committee meetings.
